In close cooperation WIND-consult GmbH and morewind engineering solutions GmbH have successfully completed the first milestone of the R&D project funded by the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and the European Union for surveying tower clearance at wind turbines.
After the first phase of the project, the high-speed camera technology, motion capture and machine learning-based image acquisition and evaluation system installed in the nacelle delivers reliable results for the distance between the tower and the blade tip while the turbine is in operation. Beginning the second phase of the project, further algorithm optimisations, the merging of the measured data with operating data and the development of market maturity will be realized.
Both companies have many years of experience in the field of accredited measurements and load simulations and are convinced to provide with the system an innovative and effective tool to further optimize the design of wind turbines. With increasing rotor diameter, the topic of tower clearance becomes more important than before and thus also for the optimization of the costs of the rotor blades. The claims on precision and traceability of the measurement results follow the requirements of surveying standards with the goal to deliver reliable data for the certification process of wind turbines. The successful completion of the R&D project and the rollout are expected in fall of 2019.
